“Shutdown” — A Glass Half Full?

US President Barack Obama is canceling trips to Malaysia and the Philippines (the purpose of the latter stop being to affirm a US commitment to “the security of the Philippines, and the broader security and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region”).

So, the “government shutdown” (in which most of the government doesn’t, um, shut down) may have at least some slight up side with respect to the US’s “bull in a china shop” foreign policy proclivities.

Probably not much of one, though: Obama will still be attending an economic summit in Indonesia. And don’t be surprised if we learn over the next few days that killer drone pilots are not among the federal government’s furloughed employees.
