Copperhead — Ron Maxwell’s new film, written by Bill Kaufmann and starring Billy Campbell, Angus MacFadyen and Peter Fonda — hits theaters on June 28th. The political press is already starting to take notice:
- At Think Progress, Alyssa Rosenberg worries about the film’s non-focus on slavery as an issue in the Civil War and wishes the filmmaker had chosen more sympathetic pacifists as characters, against a less ambiguous moral background.
- Jesse Walker (at Reason) and Jordan Bloom (at The American Conservative) take issue with Rosenberg’s argument.
- Also at The American Conservative, scriptwriter Bill Kaufmann writes about the film, and about US President James Buchanan.
