Occupy the Empire!

A Statement by Boston Come Home America (WWW.ComeHomeAmerica.US)

A time of economic crisis, protest, and popular indignation against broken and corrupt systems is the perfect time to examine and challenge U.S led wars and empire. Both recent administrations, that of Bush and Obama, have remained resolved in their blindness to the overwhelming anti-war sentiments of the people of this nation and around the world. We the people must forge a consensus based on compassion and humanity. The people here assembled are tired of war.

As people face budget cuts and job layoffs across the country, the U.S war machine is projected by prominent economists, Joseph Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilmes, to spend five trillion dollars ($5,000,000,000,000) on Iraq and Afghanistan. This spending needs to be placed on the chopping block. War is the only budget item that can be cut by trillions and also benefit the vast majority of regular people across our country and the world. It is time to scale back the entire project of U.S Empire that stretches from the undeclared, illegal war in Libya to the meddlesome and unnecessary presence of troops in the World War II battlefronts of Japan and Germany 65 years after the conclusion of that war.

It is time to zero in on the cronyism and corruption of the military industrial complex. Pallets of U.S currency were air lifted into Iraq over the course of that war. Twelve billion in U.S funds flow every month to conduct the disastrous U.S foreign policy in Afghanistan. Much of this is for no bid contracts for politically connected institutions and profiteers. Corrupt figureheads from Afghanistan, who parrot the need for a never-ending occupation, use U.S tax dollars to fund their own systems of patronage and corruption that compound the brutality endured by regular Afghani people. Billions in our resources remain unaccounted for. It is time to bring these billions home along with the soldiers who pay the ultimate price for these wars.

Men and women from our communities who believe they should defend and serve their country and those, who because our economic crisis, cannot find work, end up bearing the burden. They find out firsthand the brutality and pointlessness of sowing our economic or political system in unwilling areas of the world. Our soldiers are the ones whose families are left longing. They are the ones who face post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and even suicide. They are the ones who struggle to get mental health care and other services once their tours have been completed. The responsibility of these soldiers is to defend our country and its communities, not support war profiteers, dictators, and drug lords whose interests have nothing to do with that of the vast majority of people around the world.

It is time for the voice of the people to be heard on this issue of core importance. If we seek a more just world, a more peaceful world, where the rights of the many are not trampled by the few, let us begin by freeing ourselves and our world of the scourge of war and empire. Let us use this cause to rally the people and to point out the hypocrisy of those who say we have no funds for needs here at home. Now is the time to bring trillions in war dollars and our nation’s sons and daughters home! Let all of our resources fulfill their highest potential to enrich this nation. Leave the affairs of each land in the control its respective people consistent with the right of self-determination.
